原力是散布在銀河系中的神秘能量場。一切生命體都會產生原力。以生命形態存在的原力被稱作「生命原力」，遍布宇宙的原力則被稱作「宇宙原力」。他們是同一原力的不同部份，而其作用規模卻迥然不同。
原力源於生命，但無生命體上也存在原力。一棵大樹會產生原力，訓練有素的絕地武士能夠感知大樹所散發的原力，從中汲取力量，並能操縱這股原力從而移動大樹。無生命的機器人或巖石不會產生原力，但原力會散布到它們身上，熟諳原力者可以借此擡高巖石或是讓機器人摔倒。
絕地武士並不能壟斷原力，他們只是最為人所知的原力使用者，可以感知並操作帶有原力的物體。還有許多其他文化和學院傳授與原力相聯的能力。
絕地武士團對原力的研究長達數個世紀，其研究不僅是哲學層面的，更是科學層面的；用顯微鏡觀測原力算不上對神明的褻瀆。透過檢測，絕地武士意識到了迷地原蟲的存在。對於迷地原蟲存在著很多誤解，它們並不是原力。但它們是有機生命體與原力相連的媒介。阿納金·天行者的血液中有著極高的迷地原蟲濃度，因而具有超強的原力潛能，但僅僅具有較高的迷地原蟲讀數並不能讓一個人成為原力大師。科學或許已經解開了原力的生物學密碼，但原力本身依舊神秘莫測。
具備原力感知能力的個體可以本能地感覺到原力的流動與存在。對於生命原力的敏感度使個體可以即時做出反應，而與宇宙原力的協調則可以讓個體透過冥想感知銀河系平衡的巨大轉變。除了產生原力，生命體還可以讓原力從光明面轉向黑暗面。光明面滋養著生命，而黑暗面則帶來淪陷。要維持原力的平衡，就必須兩面共存。此般迴圈常常反映在自然世界之中。

The Force is a mystical energy field that permeates the galaxy. It is created by all living things. The Force found within life forms is the 「living Force,」 while the Force that extends throughout the cosmos is 「the cosmic Force.」 They are both aspects of the same Force, operating at vastly different scales.
The Force is generated by life, but it also can be found in the lifeless. A tree generates the Force, and a skilled Jedi can feel the Force emanating from it, can draw strength from it, and can manipulate it to cause the tree to move. A lifeless droid or a lifeless rock does not generate the Force, but still it is pervaded by it, and a Force adept can cause the rock to rise or the droid to fall over because of this.
The Jedi have no monopoly over the Force; they are simply the most well-known adepts at feeling and manipulating its presence. There are many other cultures and schools of study with the ability to connect with the Force.
The Jedi Order has studied the Force for centuries, not just philosophically but also scientifically; it is no blasphemy to put the Force under a microscope. This examination made the Jedi aware of midi-chlorians. There are many misconceptions regarding the midi-chlorians. They are not the Force. But they are the means through which an organic life-form connects to the Force. With a bloodstream especially dense with midi-chlorians, Anakin Skywalker had great Force potential, but a high midi-chlorian count alone does not make someone a powerful Force user. Science may have unlocked the biological underpinnings of the Force, but the Force itself still remains mysterious.
Force-sensitive individuals can feel the flow and presence of the Force on an instinctive level. Sensitivity to the living Force allows an individual to react in the moment, while attunement to the cosmic Force allows the meditative to sense great shifts in balance in the galaxy. In addition to creating the Force, living beings bring with them the ability to tilt the Force from light to dark. The light side nurtures life, while the dark side is an agent of destruction. For the Force to be in balance, there must be both sides. It is a cycle mirrored often in the natural world.
